Exposition des artistes de l’Association SONAMOU « Rétrospective 30e anniversaire »

L’Association The SONAMOU Artists Association is a Korean association based in Paris that brings together artists from various disciplines such as painting, sculpture, photography, installation, video, and ceramics. Through their artistic works, the association promotes the development of Korean culture internationally and participates in artistic exchanges beyond borders.

Founded in 1991 by 25 Korean artists based in Paris, including KWUN Sun Cheol, LEE Bae, CHONG Jae Kyoo, and KWAK Soo Young, the SONAMOU Association (created on August 22, 1991) began with the creation of 46 collaborative workshops with an exhibition hall (Espace Artsenal SONAMOU, first exhibition on February 18, 1992) in a former tank maintenance factory (a huge steel structure covering an area of 5000 m² and a height of 12 meters). Later, artists from different nationalities joined them, and they became an association of 46 artists. These collaborative workshops, called "Artsenal" (a word invented by combining "Art" and "Arsenal"), were a collective workspace with artists from several nationalities. For 10 years, from 1991 to 2001 (the year of its demolition by the urban planning program), an exhibition space (Espace Artsenal SONAMOU) and workshops were used for numerous exhibitions and cultural events, as well as "Open Studio Days" that helped transform the site of the Issy-les-Moulineaux factory into an artistic and cultural area.

Following the demolition of the shared workshops in 2001, the first generation "SONAMOU Association (first president KWUN Sun Cheol)" was reborn as the "SONAMOU Artists Association" with the second generation. In 2010, the multicultural association linked to the collaborative workshops became the SONAMOU Artists Association, a community of Korean artists in Paris. While retaining the original spirit, the association was reorganized and continues to this day.

The SONAMOU Artists Association plays an important role in the Korean artist community in Paris. Through various artistic activities, the association participates in cultural globalization and collaborates with other international artists, contributing to artistic exchanges between Korea and France. In October 2005, through art, it contributed to the twinning between the city of Issy-les-Moulineaux and the Guro District in Seoul.

To date, approximately 150 artists have passed through the association, which currently has over 50 active members in France. They are in contact with former members currently living in Korea and those working in the United States. The association also organizes exhibitions, both regular and abroad, in countries such as France, Korea, and the United States. Additionally, as a community of Korean artists in Paris, they promote and support expatriate artists. Thus, they have created the "SONAMOU Grant" for talented young artists.

 

 

L’Association des Artistes SONAMOU 소나무 est une association coréenne basée à Paris qui rassemble des artistes de diverses disciplines ; peinture, sculpture, photographie, installation, vidéo, céramique … À travers ces œuvres artistiques, l’Association encourage le développement de la culture coréenne à l'international et participe aux échanges artistiques au-delà des frontières.

 

En 1991 (le 22 août), avec quatre fondateurs comme KWUN Sun Cheol 권순철, LEE Bae 이배, CHONG Jae Kyoo 정재규 et KWAK Soo Young 곽수영), l’Association SONAMOU est créée par 25 artistes coréens qui travaillent en région parisienne en France. Très vite, 21 autres artistes de toutes nationalités les rejoignent. SONAMOU a débuté par la création de 46 ateliers collaboratifs avec une halle d'exposition (Espace Artsenal SONAMOU) dans l’ancien arsenal d’Issy-les-Moulineaux. (première ouverture, le 18 février 1992)

De 1991 à fin 2001, date de la fermeture de l’atelier d’Issy-les-Moulineaux, les artistes de l’association ont organisé et participé à de nombres expositions au sein de cet atelier, et leur à permis beaucoup d’échanges entre les membres d’association.

 

En 2001, l’association change de nom et devient Association des Artistes SONAMOU 소나무 작가협회(sonamu jakga hyeophoe). Depuis, l’association organise annuellement une exposition pour ses membres et plusieurs autres expositions exceptionnelles en France, en Corée, aux Etat-unis, etc. Encore aujourd’hui l’association ne cesse de se développer en invitant des artistes coréens qui travaillent aux États-Unis et en accueillant régulièrement de nouveaux membres.

 

En 2008, l’association a créé le « Lauréat du prix SONAMOU » qui récompense un artiste extérieur à l’association afin d’encourager le développement de la communauté artistique coréenne.

 

En 2022, l’Association des Artistes SONAMOU 소나무 작가협회 rectifie leur nom coréen en 소나무 예술가 협회 (sonamu yesulga hyeophoe), Présidente 2023 : KIM Hyeon Suk.

소나무 예술가 협회(Association des Artistes SONAMOU)는 작품을 통하여 한국의 예술문화와 국제 예술 문화의 교류를 증진 시키고, 예술을 매개로 국경을 초월하는 문화 글로벌화를 목표로 회화, 사진, 조각, 비디오, 설치 등 다양한 조형 예술 분야에서 활동하고 있는 작가들이 모인 파리의 대표적인 재불 한인 예술가 단체이다.

 

1991년, 권순철, 정재규, 이배, 곽수영 등을 주축으로 프랑스 파리를 중심으로 활동하는 25명의 한국인 작가들에 의해 창립된 소나무 협회(1991년 8월 22일 설립인가)는 파리 근교 이시-레-물리노(Issy-les-Moulineaux)시에 위치한 국방성 소유의 면적 5000m², 높이 12m의 거대한 철골 구조물인 사용하지 않는 옛 국방성 탱크정비 공장을 저렴한 가격에 임대 받으며 본격적인 활동을 시작했다. 과거 프랑스 정부는 이곳에서 AMX 소형 장갑차와 기관총 장갑차 탱크 등 군수품을 생산했었다. 

 

소나무 회원들은 이 거대한 공장을 40t에 달하는 강철관을 절단하고 용접하는 등 엄청난 노력으로 전시장(Espace Artsenal Sonamou)을 가진 46개의 공동 작업실로 나누는 작업에 착수했고 마침내 1992년 2월 18일, 파리 한인사회 및 프랑스 당국, 이시-레-물리노 시의 축하와 격려를 받으며 아뜰리에(Atelier)가 개관된다. 이후 21명의 다양한 국적을 가진 작가들이 가입하여 총 46명의 예술가가 모인 협회가 되었다.

 

한인 작가들이 주체가 되어 다국적 작가들과 함께 하는 집단 작업 공간으로 탄생한 이 공동작업실은 ‘아르스날(Artsenal)이라 명명됐다. 프랑스어로 예술을 뜻하는 ‘Art’와 병기창을 뜻하는 ‘Arsenal’을 조합한 신조어로 소나무 협회가 운영되었다. 

1992년 6월에는 작업실 내부에 만든 전시장에서 처음으로 46명 회원 전체의 작가 자화상 전을 열었다. 

 

1991년부터 2001년까지 10년간 사용한 공동 작업실 아르스날은 도시 계획에 의해 철거되기 전까지 이곳 전시장(Espace Artsenal Sonamou)과 작업실들을 중심으로 수많은 기획 전시회와 대외적 문화행사는 물론, 예술인 공동체로써 정기적인 ‘작업실 개방 행사(Porte ouverte)’ 등 명실상부 파리의 주요한 창작공간으로 발전하였다. 

 

설립 초기부터 협회는 프랑스나 다른 외국의 아티스트들에게도 열려 있었으며, 그렇게 창조적이고 인간적인 특별한 경험을 함께 나누며, 프랑스와 한국 사회의 작가들 간의 교류와 소통의 준거로 발전하였다. 세계 곳곳에서 온 예술가들의 다양한 실험적 작품들이 만들어졌고 예술가들이 한 장소에서 작업하고 함께 전시하면서, 자연스럽게 국제 교류가 이루어졌다. 

 

아르스날은 이후에는 뤼크 베송 감독의 영화 ‘니키타’의 배경으로 등장하기도 했으며, 공장지대였던 이시-레-물리노를 점차 문화, 예술 지대로 변화시키는 데 지대한 역할을 감당했다.

한편, 1994년 2월에는 프랑스인 후원자 귀 꼼므(Guy CAUME)씨로부터 파리 15구에 있는 전시장을 무료로 임대받아 파리 아르스날(Paris Artsenal)이라 이름 짓고 회원 전체의 첫 전시회를 열고 1998년 7월까지 41회의 전시회를 갖기도 했다.

 

2001년, 공동 작업실 철거를 계기로 제1세대 ‘소나무 협회(Association SONAMOU, 초대회장 권순철)’가, 제2세대 ‘소나무 작가 협회(Association des Artistes SONAMOU)로 새로이 탄생한다. 그때까지 작업실을 중심으로 한 다국적 예술가 협회에서 2001년, 재불 한인 예술가 공동체로서 ‘소나무 작가 협회(Association des Artistes SONAMOU)’로 협회 명칭을 변경하고 과거 소나무 협회의 전통을 계승하는 한편, 새롭게 모임을 정비하여 현재에 이르고 있다. 2022년 30년을 맞이한 소나무는 한국어 명칭을 '소나무 작가 협회'에서 '소나무 예술가 협회(2023도  회장 김현숙)'로 수정하고, 아카이브 디지털 사업과 함께 제 3세대를 열었다.

 

소나무의 일부 작가들은 이시-레-물리노 철교 아래의 아치(레자르슈 Les Arches) 아틀리에로 이전하여 작업을 계속하고 있으며, 이들은 일 년에 한 번씩 정기적으로 아틀리에를 개방하여 지역 주민들과 원활한 교류를 나누고 있다. 더불어 소나무 예술가 협회는 미주지역의 한국인 작가들을 영입하고 여러 차례에 걸쳐 신입회원을 모집하는 등 회원 내의 쉼 없는 변화와 발전을 모색하고 있다. 특히, 2008년에는 소나무 작가상의 제정을 통하여 협회 외부 예술가에게 그 상을 수여함으로써 현지 미술사회의 활성화와 발전에도 기여하고 있다.

 

소나무 예술가 협회의 가장 괄목할 성과는 한인 예술가들이 주체가 되어 외국 예술가들과 함께 집단적 작업공간인 아르스날을 마련하고, 작업, 전시, 예술가들 간의 국제교류 등을 한 것이다. 현지 한인 예술가 사회에서 중심적 역할을 맡아오면서 외국 예술가들과 다양한 작품 활동과 교류를 통해 문화 글로벌화를 실행하고, 한-불 문화교류에도 큰 기여를 해왔다. 이러한 예술을 통한 민간외교의 결실로 2005년 10월, 이시-레-물리노 시와 서울 구로구의 자매 결혼에 기여한 바 있다.

 

1990년대 들어 한국과 프랑스의 문화교류가 급속한 물결을 타기 시작, 2006년 한-불 외교수교 120주년을 맞아 두 나라의 교류가 화려하게 꽃피게 되었는데, 이러한 배경에는, 소나무 예술가들을 비롯하여 모든 한인 예술가들이 그들이 일하는 장소에서 희생과 노력을 아끼지 않고, 다른 외국 예술가들에게 그리고 그들이 살고 있는 지역에 좋은 영향을 끼치는 등 민간외교관의 역할을 잘 수행했기 때문이다. 이는 2015년과 2016년에 걸쳐 프랑스와 한국에서 진행된 다양한 한-불 외교수교 130주년 행사로 이어졌다.

 

소나무 예술가 협회는 이처럼, 현지 한인 예술가 사회에서 중심적 역할을 하며 다양한 작품 활동과 외국 예술가들과의 교류를 통해 문화 글로벌화를 실행하고, 한-불 문화 교류에도 이바지하고 있으며, 더 나아가 스페인 마드리드, 폴란드 바르샤바, 미국 LA, 워싱턴, 뉴욕 등의 재외 한국 문화원에서 전시회를 개최하는 등 국제 교류전 및 다양한 기획전을 열며 해외에서 활동 하고 있는 현지의 한국 예술가들과의 교류에도 힘쓰고 있다.

 

지금까지 150명이 넘는 예술가들이 소나무 예술가 협회를 거쳐 갔으며, 2022년 현재 프랑스에만 50여 명의 정회원이 활동하고 있고, 귀국 후 한국, 미국 등지에서 활동하는 회원들과 교류는 물론, 더 나아가 재외 한국 예술가들에게 문호를 개방하고 프랑스, 한국, 미국 등 여러 지역에서 정기전 및 국제 교류전과 다양한 기획전을 개최하고 있다.
